Every year on September 22, people from around the world celebrate World Car-Free Day and give up their cars for a day.
The motto of the day is “City as a space for people’s lives”, reports Kharkiv Regional State Administration (RU).
In State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine said: “The Day without cars will not only improve the ecological situation in the country but also contribute to the formation of a responsible attitude to the environment.”
BACKGROUND: The first Car Free Day was held in 1973 in Switzerland: the government in connection with the fuel crisis has urged citizens to give up cars for four days. In 1997, the first nationwide campaign was held in UK. In 1998, the campaign “Car Free Day” took place in France. And already in 2001, more than a thousand cities in 35 countries including Canada, Brazil and Japan formally joined the movement.
Since 2002, under the auspices of the European Commission every year from 16 to 22 September European Mobility Week takes place in many cities around the world. Every year about 100 million people in more than 1,500 cities participate in the “Car Free Day”.
