Poroshenko rejects special status area for Kharkiv

UKraine President Petro Poroshenko considers all regions must have equal conditions for development, reports Ukrainian news (RU) with reference to the official website of the President (UK).

Poroshenko, in particular, believes that “it is necessary to create equal conditions for the economic development of the regions, ensure the ability of local government to build an effective system of territorial organization of power in Ukraine.”

Thus, he answered on a petition of Kharkivens in support of Slobozhanshchina, which on May 9, 2016, received more than 25,000 votes.

Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko speaks to the media during a news conference in KievThe President in his reply to the petition also notes that the decision to impose in a region most favored investment regime should be made in the context of the reforms taking place in Ukraine, taking into account the provisions of the Strategy for Sustainable Development “Ukraine – 2020”.

“The solution must comply with the principle of subsidiarity, the omnipresence of and the financial sustainability of local government.”

The President of Ukraine entrusted the Prime Minister of Ukraine Vladimir Groisman and Chairman of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Igor Rainin to “thoroughly and comprehensively study the petition based on the strategic guidelines of the state development, of started reform on budget decentralization and Ukraine’s international obligations.”

BACKGROUND: On May 26, over 500 proponents of the creation of Slobozhanshchina in the Kharkiv region marched from the government of Ukraine to the presidential administration building in Kyiv.
