Since the new year Ukraine has officially assumed its duties as a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations. This was stated in the message of Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations.
Ukrainian diplomats thanked all the countries which have supported the candidacy of Ukraine at the post. “We are ready to closely cooperate in ensuring global peace and security,” a mission representative of Ukraine Vladimir Yelchenko said.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 members: five permanent with the right to veto, and 10 non-permanent members. The permanent members are France, the United Kingdom, the United States, China and the Russian Federation, and non-permanent ones are Ukraine, Angola, Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Senegal, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
Ukraine was elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council on October 15th, 2015 for the period 2016-2017. The current representative of Ukraine to the UN is Vladimir Yelchenko. The diplomat took over the post after Yuri Sergeyev.
