Kharkivens could issue a plastic ID passport from January 11th

“From January 1st, 2016 Migration Service of Ukrauine begins the process of introduction of fundamentally new identity cards – plastic cards with contactless electronic media. The system testing on a national scale will start From the first working day of the new year.

“The certificates registration for citizens will be possible since January 11th, 2016. Turnaround time of the new document is the same as time of usual one – 10 working days,” said Interior Minister, Arsen Avakov, on his Facebook page.

He also noted that the replacement of the old passports for a new plastic identification document is voluntary, and the law of Ukraine provides for a 5-year transition period.

To get a new ID-card it is need to bring a valid passport to the Department of Migration Service. If the passport has not been issued yet, the person need to submit a birth certificate only. The photo will be made directly at the Department of Migration Service.

Maxim Sokolyuk, the head of Migration Service, offers to issue plastic cards from 14 years. But it is necessry to make legislative changes that have already been submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
